Beckham is sparklingly fresh. Being a mother, businesswoman and perpetual traveller all at once has not jaded her, and we like to think that’s because she’s realized that the seductive aesthetic of success can also be achieved in loose layers and flat shoes. Peppered with sophisticated international flavor that only a well-travelled individual would succeed in emulating, VB’s latest drop is unexpected(ly good).
But we like change; traditional African kente fabric fused with Hawaiian prints feels surprising, at first a little jarring, but ultimately personal – enduring qualities of any good collection. Silhouettes are defined but never rigid, polished but never intimidating. Necklines range from proper to plunging, with each ensemble displaying elements of history and modernity. As Vogue’s Sarah Mower puts it, “The clothes read as expensive, with a luxurious, creamy heft and swish about them, exuding a wealthy confidence that says, “I have achieved the perfect life, but I don’t need to try too hard to show that off to you.””
Forget accessorizing this perfectly sufficient collection; if you demand more than a raw leather cross body and a floppy hat for Spring days spent frolicking, shop elsewhere. This is the land of the carefree and the effortless; hems are a little longer, skirts a little flowier, the world a little smaller.
There is plenty of geometric exploration, suede cut-in semicircles in unexpected hues make the collection something of a grown-up lego set for the discerning woman to play with. Sometimes, though, the prints felt a fraction too incoherent and too avant-garde to retain refinement.
VB has come far from her days of churning out booty-hugging minidresses and placing every model in topplingly tall stilettos, and one can only hope her progression continues to face her with the unknown and conquer it with a focused vision.
Beckham’s confidence in her evolution as a designer is inspiring, and the versatile creative she’s shown herself to be in this collection will leave critics and fans in suspense for what she has planned next.
